GCA Philosophy of Athletics

The philosophy of athletics at Greenbrier Christian Academy is founded solely on the teachings and principles of God's Word. Greenbrier Christian Academy's athletic program is an extension of the overall philosophy of the school (found in student handbook).

It is the goal of the athletic program to provide our school community and the surrounding community with a strong Christ-like example through our attitudes, actions, communications, and efforts in competition (Colossians 3:17).It is also the goal of the athletic program to see as many unsaved students, parents, and friends develop an understanding and knowing relationship with Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (Matthew 28:19-20).

The athletic program at Greenbrier strives to win every game, match, or meet; however, it is not the desire of the school for this to be our emphasis. Greenbrier Christian Academy Athletic exist solely to show the athletes that striving for the eternal prize of salvation in Jesus Christ is the only way to truly be a winner in all they do (I Corinthians 9:24-27). If an athlete understands that sports are simply life training tools and how these tools are used to broaden God's glory, then Greenbrier Christian Academy Athletics has prepared the athletes. (Ephesians 6:10-20).

Sportsmanship

Colossians 3:17
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him”

Greenbrier Christian Academy believes that team and individual competition contribute significantly to the development of Christian character and school spirit. Sportsmanship and fair play are important parts of this experience. We expect our coaches, players, faculty and students to represent GCA, both on and off the field, in a manner that is respectful of others and mirrors the image of Jesus. It is our desire and goal that we develop and practice the highest standards of Christian character, which include discipline, courtesy, good sportsmanship, and the ability to act as good host and guest. We encourage enthusiastic support at all games within the boundaries of excepted good sportsmanship. We expect all adult spectators to uphold the same high standards that we demand of our student supporters and players.

Student-athletes who fail to display proper behavior and/or good sportsmanship before, during, and after an athletic contest or practice may be barred from further participation at the discretion of the Athletic Director. Offenders will be dealt with, on an individual basis, by the Athletic Director and the coach. Penalties such as probation or suspension for one or more games may be imposed based upon the seriousness of the transgression. Spectators, students or adults, who repeatedly display poor sportsmanship or improper behavior at any athletic contest, may be asked to leave the competition area. Based on the circumstances, they may be barred from attending any games for the remainder of the season.

Greenbrier Christian Academy is a member of the Metro Athletic Conference and Virginia Independent State Athletic Association (VISAA), which sets guidelines for sportsmanship for the member schools. A copy of the conference sportsmanship policy may be picked up from the athletic office.
