Meet your Music Teacher!
I began teaching music at Greenbrier Christian Academy in 2014. I truely believe I have the BEST, most exciting job in our school! Every week brings new opportunities for our music students to sing, play, and dance their way into music literacy. I am responsible for music instruction for our Kindergarten though 4th grade classes, after which our students have options to participate in band studies or choral singing. Our approach to teaching music is centered on the National Strands of Music Literacy: Creating, Performing, and Responding. These standards focus on conceptual understanding in areas that reflect the processes in which all musicians engage.
What Do We Teach? At Greenbrier Christian Academy, we begin music instruction at the earliest age possible, starting with our Preschool classes. Each class from Kindergarten through 4th grade receives a 40-minute music class each week. In our music classroom, we use the Music Expressions Curriculum, a comprehensive and interconnected music education curriculum for students in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Expressions Music Curriculum™ is a fully integrated, literacy-driven music program based on the National Standards for Music Education.

What Do We Teach?
Our Kindergarten through 4th grade students receive a 40-minute music class once a week in which they receive instruction in developing music theory and literacy skills, performing through singing and playing instruments, and responding to and creating music independently. Music instruction throughout each grade includes music history and introductions to multi-cultural contexts where students make connections to music and other fields (art, language, math, etc.) as well as understanding music influences and history in other cultures. Our small class sizes giving students more opportunities for hands-on experience and music instruction tailored to each class. Our fully stocked music classroom offers students weekly opportunities to perform on a variety of classroom instruments; including autoharps, recorders, Orff instruments, resonator bells, and many others.
Special Opportunities for 4th Grade Students
Each year our 4th grade classes participate in several special opportunities as a culmination of their previous years of music instruction. 4th grade classes participate in the 5th and 6th grade choir’s musical, where they not only experience choral singing in a larger setting, but also receive an introduction into our Bridge (5th – 6th grade) Choir. Our 4th grade students receive recorder instruction as part of their music curriculum including a recorder performance at our end-of-the-year school concert. Recorder instruction also serves to provide students an opportunity to play an instrument before entering either into 5th grade band or choir.
4th graders also take an annual trip to the Virginia Symphony’s “Young People’s Concerts”. This year, the Virginia Symphony concert features Carnegie Hall's "Link Up" program, which engages students by leading them to play their recorders and sing along with the orchestra from their seats.
