Language Arts

Handwriting

Students reinforce their manuscript handwriting skills using the Zaner Bloser model.

Phonics/Spelling

Phonemic awareness is reinforced as students continue to practice blending and word building. Phonics instruction includes lessons on clusters, digraphs, and blends, as well as syllable patterns. Spelling lessons reinforce what students have been learning as part of their phonics instruction.

Reading

Reading comprehension is taught using a program that is skill-focused and not book or content-focused. High quality children’s literature is used as a basis for reading instruction, and literature is carefully selected to complement the skill being taught. Thinking skills are explicitly modeled, and students learn to organize their thoughts using visual tools. Then they meet with the teacher in daily small groups for discussion and practice. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are included as a critical part of 1st and 2nd grade reading instruction. Some of the skills taught in the first grade include Cause and Effect, Character, Genre, Retelling, and Sequence of Events.
