Reading comprehension is taught using a program that is skill-focused and not book or content-focused. High-quality children’s literature is used as a basis for reading instruction, and literature is carefully selected to complement the skill being taught. Thinking skills are explicitly modeled, and students learn to organize their thoughts using visual tools. Then they meet with the teacher in daily small groups for discussion and practice. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are included as a critical part of 1st and 2nd grade reading instruction. Some of the skills taught in the second grade include Cause and Effect, Classification, Sequence of Events, and Main Idea.
