3rd Grade Curriculum


Students study the following units during the third grade year:

  • Judges (Deborah, Gideon, Samson, Ruth, and Samuel)
  • Kings (Saul, David)
  • Life of Christ (The Last Supper through the Great Commission)
  • Jonah (inductive study)

Language Arts

Handwriting - Students continue to learn cursive writing using the Zaner Bloser model.

Spelling - Spelling instruction teaches and reinforces the following skills:

  • Consonants
  • Vowels
  • Inflections
  • Compound words
  • Contractions
  • Possessives
  • Affixes
  • Syllabication

High-frequency words

Reading - Reading comprehension is taught using a program that is skill-focused and not book or content-focused. High quality children’s literature is used as a basis for reading instruction, and literature is carefully selected to complement the skill being taught. Thinking skills are explicitly modeled, and students learn to organize their thoughts using visual tools. Then they meet with the teacher in daily small groups for discussion and practice. Some of the skills taught in the third grade include Character, Main Idea, Drawing Conclusions, Setting, and Summary.


  • Parts of Speech—nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions
  • Grammar—plurals, capitalization
  • Writing—sentences, poetry
  • Reference Skills—dictionary skills, reference materials

  • Number Sense and Operations - Place value to thousands; compare, order, and round whole numbers
  • Computation and Estimation - Addition and subtraction of up to 4-digit numbers; multiplication and division; word problems; counting money and making change; basic fractions
  • Measurement - Time and temperature
  • Probability and Statistics - Graphing and analyzing data; probability
