Eighth grader Faith Spangler has been crowned Spelling Bee Champ in GCA's annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. After over ten rounds, the field narrowed to the final three, with Hannah Wilson and Silas Fox finishing in second and third place, respectively. Hannah and Faith went on to compete for several rounds as the final two spellers, correctly spelling words such as gesticulation, interminableness, prestidigitation, and moiety. Faith finished on top when she correctly spelled Lilliput.
Faith will represent GCA at The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 18th in Norfolk. The champion will move on to the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.
Congratulations and good luck, Faith!
GCA has been awarded a National Beta School of Distinction title in recognition of our Beta Club membership and the academic performance and overall character development of our student members. The National Beta Club is one of the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organizations in America and exists to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership.
Our Beta Club student membership has doubled under the leadership of our Faculty Chair, Miss Nona Kelly, and its student members are often seen serving above and beyond expectations in our school and throughout the community. Congratulations to our Beta Club student members and faculty chair, Miss Kelly!
GCA science students welcomed Dr. Thomas Altman, nationally awarded innovator in STEM and Physics, as a guest lecturer. Dr. Altman spent time with our Collegiate Academy’s Earth Science, Astronomy, and Physics classes, sharing his innovative techniques and exciting demonstrations. Students were treated to several hands-on lessons, including a demonstration of the Photoelectric Effect, for which Albert Einstein won a Nobel Prize.
Dr. Altman is the inventor of a technique used around the world for making holograms and is the creator of a laser optics kit used by thousands of students. He has won awards at the local, state, and national level for his innovative teaching techniques and his instructional videos have been viewed by over two million viewers on YouTube.
On October 5th, 2016, Greenbrier Christian Academy held its annual Beta Club Induction Ceremony during chapel. In keeping with the mission of the National Beta Club, Greenbrier Christian Academy seeks to recognize deserving students in the area of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership by appointing members to the GCA National Senior and National Junior Beta Club. Dr. William Cox, Professor and Director of Christian Education Programs at Regent University, gave a profound message based on the principles found in Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” He challenged the incoming Beta members to return blessings to teachers, and others, by way of using their speech to encourage one another. Greenbrier Christian Academy is honored to have inducted 24 new students into this prestigious club.
The video of Dr. Cox's message can be viewed below:
Wednesday, September 30, GCA students joined other young Christians around the county in gathering around the flagpoles of their schools early in the morning to pray. Students prayed, read scripture, and sang songs of worship lead by the GCA Praise team during this annual prayer rally for our country and school.
See You at the Pole began as a grass roots movement in 1990 and has since become a world-wide event that sees Christian young people lifting up their peers, teachers, schools, and nation in prayer.
Thank you to all of the student walkers who participated in the 2016 Walk for Life this Spring in support of the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater. While many GCA students participated through their churches, several Gator teams and student groups got together independently to support this cause!
