Collegiate Academy (Grades 7-12)

Purpose Statement: The Collegiate Academy (grades 7-12) seeks to prepare students through spiritual, academic and social opportunities that emphasize their participation in God's kingdom by using the gifts and talents God has invested in them.

Theme Verse: And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13

Our Gators have been showing their school spirit as we look toward our Homecoming weekend with a week’s worth of fun themed days! Our Homecoming week theme this year took on a Disney flair, with days matching up to favorite Disney movies.

The week kicked off with “Monster’s University” Monday, with our GCA Gators wearing their favorite college gear. We saw friends, teachers, and even whole classes twinning it on Twin Tuesday (inspired by The Parent Trap) and Wednesday may have gone down as the most comfortable day at school ever as students finally got a pajama themed “Sleeping Beauty” day! The halls filled with Hawaiian shirts and flower leis for “Lilo and Stich” Hawaiian day and the week wrapped up with “Tick Tock Croc” Friday as we represent our Gator pride in Orange and Blue Gator wear!

After an exciting week, we hope to see you at our annual Homecoming Game Saturday, February 4th. Below is the schedule for the night’s activities. Go Gators!

Jonee LillardCongratulations to class of 2016 graduate Jonée Lillard on achieving a perfect score on the National ACS Exam. Jonée is the first student to earn a perfect score in the past two years, with the second highest score being a 53 out of 70.

The national chemistry exam, produced by the American Chemical Society, is given to first year college students enrolled in general chemistry. The results are a tool for professors to measure their students' knowledge against other students throughout the country. Over the past two years, the exam has been given to approximately 3,800 students from 34 colleges.

Way to go, Jonée!  We are so proud of you and excited to see where God leads you.

Spelling Bee ChampsEighth grader Faith Spangler has been crowned Spelling Bee Champ in GCA's annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.  After over ten rounds, the field narrowed to the final three, with Hannah Wilson and Silas Fox finishing in second and third place, respectively.  Hannah and Faith went on to compete for several rounds as the final two spellers, correctly spelling words such as gesticulation, interminableness, prestidigitation, and moiety.  Faith finished on top when she correctly spelled Lilliput.

Faith will represent GCA at The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 18th in Norfolk.  The champion will move on to the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

Congratulations and good luck, Faith!

National Beta Club School of DistinctionGCA has been awarded a National Beta School of Distinction title in recognition of our Beta Club membership and the academic performance and overall character development of our student members. The National Beta Club is one of the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organizations in America and exists to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership.

Our Beta Club student membership has doubled under the leadership of our Faculty Chair, Miss Nona Kelly, and its student members are often seen serving above and beyond expectations in our school and throughout the community. Congratulations to our Beta Club student members and faculty chair, Miss Kelly!

Dr. Altman

GCA science students welcomed Dr. Thomas Altman, nationally awarded innovator in STEM and Physics, as a guest lecturer. Dr. Altman spent time with our Collegiate Academy’s Earth Science, Astronomy, and Physics classes, sharing his innovative techniques and exciting demonstrations. Students were treated to several hands-on lessons, including a demonstration of the Photoelectric Effect, for which Albert Einstein won a Nobel Prize.

Dr. Altman is the inventor of a technique used around the world for making holograms and is the creator of a laser optics kit used by thousands of students. He has won awards at the local, state, and national level for his innovative teaching techniques and his instructional videos have been viewed by over two million viewers on YouTube.

On October 5th, 2016, Greenbrier Christian Academy held its annual Beta Club Induction Ceremony during chapel. In keeping with the mission of the National Beta Club, Greenbrier Christian Academy seeks to recognize deserving students in the area of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership by appointing members to the GCA National Senior and National Junior Beta Club. Dr. William Cox, Professor and Director of Christian Education Programs at Regent University, gave a profound message based on the principles found in Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” He challenged the incoming Beta members to return blessings to teachers, and others, by way of using their speech to encourage one another. Greenbrier Christian Academy is honored to have inducted 24 new students into this prestigious club.
