4th Grade Curriculum

Bible

Fourth grade students use the Inductive Bible Study Method to study the life of Jesus as told in the book of John.

Language Arts

Handwriting - Students continue to practice their cursive writing using the Zaner Bloser model.

Spelling - Spelling instruction teaches and reinforces the following skills:

  • Consonants
  • Vowels
  • Inflections
  • Compound words
  • Contractions
  • Possessives
  • Affixes
  • Syllabication
  • High-frequency words

Reading - Reading comprehension is taught using a program that is skill-focused and not book or content-focused. High quality children’s literature is used as a basis for reading instruction, and literature is carefully selected to complement the skill being taught. Thinking skills are explicitly modeled, and students learn to organize their thoughts using visual tools. Then they meet with the teacher in daily small groups for discussion and practice. Some of the skills taught in the fourth grade include Character, Plot, and Setting.

English

  • Parts of Speech—nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns
  • Writing—sentences, creative writing, research writing
  • Reference Skills—reference materials and research

Math

  • Number Sense and Operations - Ordinal position; place value to hundred millions
  • Computation and Estimation - Addition and subtraction with regrouping; multiplying multi-digit numbers; basic division facts; long division; rounding numbers; counting money and making change
  • Geometry - Polygons; angles
  • Measurement - Elapsed time; calendar skills; reading a thermometer
  • Probability and Statistics - Graphing
