5th Grade Curriculum


Students study the following units during the fifth grade year:

Language Arts

Spelling - Spelling instruction teaches and reinforces the following skills:

  • Consonants
  • Vowels
  • Inflections
  • Compound words
  • Contractions
  • Possessives
  • Affixes
  • Syllabication
  • High-frequency words

Reading - Reading comprehension is taught using a program that is skill-focused and not book or content-focused. High quality children’s literature is used as a basis for reading instruction, and literature is carefully selected to complement the skill being taught. Thinking skills are explicitly modeled, and students learn to organize their thoughts using visual tools. Then they meet with the teacher in daily small groups for discussion and practice. Some of the skills taught in the fifth grade include Character, Plot, Setting and Theme.


  • Parts of Speech—nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions
  • Grammar—sentences, punctuation
  • Writing—creative writing, research writing
  • Reference Skills—study skills, reference materials, research

  • Number Sense and Operations - Place value to hundred billions; prime and composite numbers
  • Computation and Estimation - Addition and subtraction with regrouping; multi-step word problems; multi-digit multiplication and division; division with remainders; rounding numbers; decimals
  • Fractions - Add, subtract, multiply, and divide, including like and unlike denominators, mixed numbers, and simplifying answers
  • Measurement - Elapsed time; measuring length, weight, capacity, and mass; converting units of measurement
  • Patterns, Functions, and Algebra - Function tables; exponents; expressions with variables
